Dr. Peter H. Ackell is one of five cardiac interventionalists at Appleton Heart Institute. He is president of Appleton Cardiology Associates. Dr. Ackell specializes in nonsurgical procedures that help improve the quality of life for heart patients. His greatest skills are most apparent in interventional procedures, including the newest radiation technique, intracoronary brachytherapy.

Dr. Ackell has taken a lead in initiating and coordinating multiple ongoing cardiac research studies at Appleton Heart Institute. His particular area of interest includes national research related to lipids and cholesterol management. He was the principal investigator of the CARE study, a five-year investigation about cholesterol reduction and recurrent heart attacks. In this role of coordinating research participation, Dr. Ackell also helps the rest of the staff incorporate new learning from the projects into day-to-day patient evaluation, monitoring and care.
Dr. Ackell received his degree in medicine from the University of Virginia Medical School. His internship and residency were at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., followed by a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Before joining Appleton Cardiology in 1989, Dr. Ackell was a consulting cardiologist at the Tulsa Heart Center. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases and maintains a full-time clinical practice in cardiology.
